Safeguarding Medicinal Marijuana

I don’t like drugs and I don’t use drugs. However, I do support keeping medicinal marijuana legal and available to those who need it.

Recently I received an e-mail from the Drug Policy Alliance ( alerting me to a letter sent by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to Congress demanding that members not renew the Rohrabacher-Farr amendment, which protects medical marijuana from federal interference. In other words, the attorney general wants the amendment abolished, so marijuana patients and providers can be prosecuted.

According to the e-mail, thirty states have full medical marijuana, as do Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam. There are also 15 CBD-only states, which allow a limited form of medical marijuana. (In a post by, “The Leading Source for Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues,” CBD is Cannabidiol, one of the 400+ ingredients found in marijuana and is not psychoactive. The use of a CBD extract, usually in oil form, with minimal tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is often used for the treatment of epilepsy or seizures in seriously ill children.)

What can be done to protect medicinal marijuana and it’s users from federal harassment and prosecution? On June 15, 2017, the CARERS Act was introduced to Congress. This proposed legislation will end federal prohibition of medical marijuana, let states set their own policies, and protect patients and providers from federal prosecution. It will also de-schedule CBD so that individuals from states with CBD laws that do not have CBD production can travel to and from states that produce CBD to purchase it. And it would remove barriers to federal marijuana research and allow veterans to discuss and receive recommendations for medical marijuana with Veterans’ Affairs physicians.

The Senate bill was introduced as a bi-partisan effort by Senators Booker (D-NJ), Paul (R-KY), Gillibrand (D-NY), Lee (R-UT), Franken (D-MN), and Murkowski (R-AK). The House companion was reintroduced by Rep Young (R-AK) and Rep Cohen (D-TN).

If you agree with the CARERS Act, what can you do? Click on the “Take Action” button below to send a pre-written message to your Congress members urging them to pass the CARERS Act that protects patients, providers, and veterans from federal attacks.

Take Action
